Meet the Team

Yvonne Shuttleworth - Owner

Most of my previous career history was office based until 2006 when I took the plunge to open my own business, firstly as a 'The Little Gym' franchise and then in 2010 re-branding as Balance & Beam Gymnastics.  We now have over 500 children attending on a weekly basis so literally thousands have come through the doors since we opened and it's a real privilege to have been part of their lives.

I have various High School qualifications including A levels, Child Psychology, Childcare Learning & Development Level 3, including the importance of play along with Business Management courses & a Business Mentor/Coach to back me up and of course a love of gymnastics and getting little people into a physical environment from a very early age.

I have a wonderful husband, who is an avid road cyclist, 3 grown up children, Elliott, owner of Boom Battlebar,  Jordan, owner of Capacity Functional Fitness in Eccleshall, Holly, a Junior Litigation Executive and CILEX at a Solicitors in Manchester and a gorgeous little grand daughter, Bella, 4 who has been coming to classes here since she was 4 months old.

I love being physically active and being 'functionally fit' courtesy of Capacity FF,  running, road biking and the odd triathlon when I get chance.

Jim Charlesworth - General Manager

Hi, my name is Jim and I am the General Manager here at Balance & Beam.

I have worked in the fitness industry for 15 years and have a background of Personal Training and nutrition. I have two years’ experience of teaching KS1 and KS2 primary school P.E, children’s fitness classes and sports coaching and afterschool clubs. This is where I developed my love for working with children!

Jim Charlesworth

I love the buzz and the atmosphere in the Gym when the classes are on and seeing the children develop is a really rewarding part of the job. The curriculum-based classes are well structured and find the perfect balance of work and fun every time - I’m yet to see a child leave without a smile on their face!

The one thing that stands out to me at Balance & Beam is the personal touch, everyone is welcomed by name with a smile at the door and the instructors know each individual child so well.

We pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable so if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to speak to myself or one of the team

Pam Green - Marketing Consultant & HR

My Name is Pam & I’ve been here since March 2014.

it’s been amazing to see the business grow so much in this time and I feel very proud to have been part of this growth. I have worked in marketing for most of my working life and marketing Balance & Beam has been amazing. Seeing so many children enrol into our programme and develop in both

confidence and ability is a real privilege. I’ve also met some lovely parents along the way.

I enjoy fitness & sport so joining Balance & Beam has been great fun. I enjoy going to the gym which I do regularly with my lovely husband Phil. I also love walking & we try and go for a walk every evening. We have 2 grown up

children and I also have a beautiful little granddaughter, Violet Dolly who is so much fun to be around and I love to spoil her.

Charlotte Cartwright - Gymnastics & Child Development Instructor

Hi, I’m Charlotte & I am 22 years old.  I’m an ex gymnast who represented City of Stoke’s gymnastics squad in the West Midlands regional competitions for 9 years.

I have worked at Balance & Beam for 6 years and I absolutely love being a member of the team as it is great to see all the children enjoying themselves and having fun.  I have recently started working full time here and have completed my Level 1 Award in coaching Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.

Working at Balance & Beam is extremely rewarding & enables me to use my gymnastics experience when teaching children and help them to develop different skills as well as giving them encouragement to try new things.

Lauren Gorton - Child Development Instructor

Lauren G

Hi, my name is Lauren!  I started working for the amazing Balance & Beam team in September 2016 and I’ve loved every minute of it! I’ve always known I wanted to work with children and being a big kid myself, this job seemed like the perfect fit!

It’s been wonderful to see so many little people (and maybe even not-so-little people) grow, learn and develop through gymnastics over the years, I started coaching when I was 17 and have also hosted lots of our wonderful Balance & Beam birthday parties (if I do say so myself!)

I look forward to meeting many more little people as we welcome you to our Balance & Beam family!

Phoebe De Caso - Child Development Instructor

I’m 18 years old and have been working at Balance & Beam for around a year and a half now. I am studying at college and get to have fun in the gym in the evenings and weekends. I have done gymnastics for a long time and was even a member here personally when I was 4.

I really enjoy teaching here and socialising with little people. I find it very satisfying to watch the children grow & develop and build their confidence in class.

Working here has really developed my personal skills and confidence too and I’m really excited to work with children and being a part of their early years development

Luke Greathead - Child Development & Gymnastics Instructor

I am 'the best' male instructor in the Balance & Beam Team & I love every minute of it,even though I am only 'very' part time now after having qualified as a Primary School Teacher

I moved into the area when I began to study History and Politics at Keele University and decided to stick around and now teach at a local school in Newcastle.  I have been doing gymnastics for as long as I can remember and when I was 14 I began to volunteer as a coach for my local gymnastics club.

Working with children of all abilities and seeing them develop as a person and as a gymnast is very rewarding and one of the best parts of this job.

Unfortunately, I'm only here on Sundays so don't get to see you all the time.

Jo Walley - Child Development & Gymnastics Instructor

Hi, I’m Jo and I’m an ex-gymnast who represented Blythe Sports Acro in regional and national level acrobatics competitions.

Jo Walley

It’s been quite a few years since I did gymnastics, but I always do a cartwheel whenever I’m on the beach and I love to keep fit and active - I run 5k most days and do other physical activities when I can.

I’m a life coach who helps people figure out what they’d like more of in their life and what they can do to enjoy their life even more. I love to work with people to help them shine.

I’m a qualified gymnastics coach who helps people learn new skills and build confidence, all whilst having fun!
